Mets win 2-0 against Marlins
Box Score
Johan pitches a complete game, 3 hitter to get the Mets another ‘tomorrow’ and allow the Mets to remain in the mix. What a game. It’s one for the ages. Short rest, previous start had a career high of 125 pitches and Johan goes out and just gets it done. As Johan said, “There’s no tomorrow.” He went out, knowing that he had to give them everything he had, just to keep them alive. He did it. Now we just have to wait & watch — and hope.

It seems fitting that, on the weekend where Shea will see its last regular season game, Johan gives the fans and the Stadium a send off they deserve.

Season Over?

2008 Season No Comments

Well, things haven’t been breaking the Mets’ way, tonight… Cubs look like they are on their way to a loss with Rickie Weeks hitting a 3 run HR in the 7th. Mets couldn’t do a thing against Cy Young, er I mean — what the hell is is name? Chris Volstad… Marlins look like they are really enjoying the role of spoiler.

Well, the Met game just went final. Toss another in the ‘L’ column.

Let’s go Cubs!

Ugh…Bittersweet Win Last Night.

2008 Season No Comments

The Mets pulled one out last night. Snatching the season from utter disaster, Carlos Beltran smoked one off of the glove of the Cubs’ fill-in first baseman, Hoffpauir, to drive in Reyes from 2nd. Well, it was nice to see and sure I was happy that they won to keep the season alive, but the win was bittersweet. It reminded me of the squandered opportunity the Mets had on Wednesday. If they had won that one (which only would’ve taken a semi-loud out), they would be tied with the Phillies for the division. If all things stayed status quo through this weekend, the Mets would get the division, as they have the better record against the Phillies, while they would slip into the wild card spot.

As it is, the Mets are fighting for their lives with the Marlins in town, looking for a repeat performance of last year. The Mets have Pelfrey going tonight, Knight or Niese tomorrow (weather permitting) and Santana on Sunday. If the game tomorrow gets rained out, they’ll play a double header on Sunday. In that case, there’d be little doubt that you’d have Santana and Perez. If you’re looking for some bulletin board material, there’s no shortage of it…
From the Sun Sentinal

“It was pretty amazing going from how loud that stadium could be to you could hear a pin drop. I remember hearing some of the guys saying they saw fans that were crying. Obviously, they were hanging their heads. You like being in a situation to be able to knock somebody out like that.”
- Mike Jacobs

From the Palm Beach Post:

“It was just fun hearing 55,000 people not say a word.”
- Scott Olsen

“It was not a good memory and I’m hoping we can make it not good memories for them again this year.”
- Paul LoDuca

If just getting in the post season isn’t enough, I hope this can fuel some of the fire the Mets need to get it done this weekend. Remember last year? I was at the 2nd to last game…that was the game the Mets really pissed off the Marlins. No problem — as long as you can back it up the next day. Tom Glavine couldn’t get out of the first. Remember, Hanley Ramirez said he’d go out there on 2 broken legs to beat the Mets. Time to get some payback. 2 of 3 is a must. A sweep would be a miracle. Let’s all pray :)

Johan gives ‘pen much needed rest after 14 inning marathon!

2008 Season No Comments

Well, the Mets had a clutch it, last night, from Mr. Clutch, Fernando Tatis. Hehit a bomb, in the bottom of the ninth getting the Mets to even with the Cards at 8 runs a piece. How many more clutch hits does this guy have left in his bat? I mean, I’m willing to find out… Jeez! He just keeps coming up big! It was a little disappointing when the Mets couldn’t capitalize, with the shot Tatis gave them, in the innings to follow.  They had plenty of chances, that’s for sure!  The Mets came up empty in 15 of their 16 chances with runners in scoring position — not good.  Yeah, they had a blown call at 2nd where the 2nd baseman never had control of the ball and Chavez (I think) was called out.  Still, all they needed was something more than a weak tapper (or three) to the pitcher.  Ahh well, tomorrow’s another day.

They needed a big game from Johan — and he was up to the task!  Johan gets his first complete game as a Met (should be his second, but whatever).  He was absolutely dominant today.  The Cards scattered 6 hits and one run on a Pujols Homer over the 9 innings pitched by Johan.  It was great to hear the Shea faithful cheering and chanting Johan’s name in the ninth…Wish I was there!  Oh, and Johan also hit a single or two…OK, so he didn’t run on the first one and should’ve been at second on the first one, but he was driven in by the batters to follow so, no harm, no foul.

Don’t forget, my favorite player — Carlos Beltran.  If any Met fan wonders what you’d be giving up if you didn’t have Beltran as your centerfielder, just take a look at the play he made today.
Beltran7-27-08.jpg
What a play that was.  He went a long way and timed his leap perfectly to rob a run from the Cardinals.  It reminds me of a certain play the guy who was playing in right made in ‘06…  OK, Maybe Endy’s catch was in a more pressure filled spot but it was almost as good!  Let’s not forget Endy’s just a little bit shorter and got a little bit higher.  Endy’s catch was probably the best catch I’ve ever seen.  I was there for the game and the crowd went absolutely WILD!  This reminded me of it because of the reaction that Beltran got from the crowd when he brought it back in.  He really went back on that ball well!

Don’t forget the offense that just beat Loshe into the ground…Wright, Tatis & Castro all going deep…plenty of hits.  Well, they’re on their way to Florida to battle the Marlins who, are definitely within striking distance!  The Phillies also pull the last 2 games out of their rears to help them gain a game and then keep pace, remaining 1 game back.

LET’S GO METS!

Reyes and the celebration…

2008 Season No Comments

Jeez…who the hell would’ve thought this story would even be, well, a story, let alone a 3 day discussion?  Yeah, on Wednesday Jose Reyes hit a big 3 run bomb and had his finger in the air while rounding 2nd.  While I am a fan of just going about your business, I don’t think it was that big of a deal.  If you haven’t seen it, check it out here.

Probably the funniest description I’ve heard regarding this play was from Mike Francessa, who said it reminded him of a little kid playing ‘airplane’ running around the bases — pretty funny…  The Phillies didn’t think so, however.  Charlie Manuel said, “When we retaliate against things, I’m all for that.”  He didn’t stop there…  He also said, “A good fight never hurt nobody.”  Ryan Madson, who was pitching when Reyes hit the homer, didn’t take offense at the Reyes celebration but saw it more as an overall attitude of this Met team.  He said, “That’s the way that team is — they’re going to do that.”  This has a little bit of the feel of the tension the Mets and the rest of the league and, in particular, the Cardinals had back in ‘86.  Madson was also asked if there’s general dislike for the Mets and he replied, “That’s a fair statement. Yes.”

It didn’t end there…I saved the best for last.  The Phillies broadcaster and former reliever Larry Andersen actually called for retaliation in the worst form.  He said, while on the air, “Somebody ought to put one in his neck.”  Yeah, and they say the Mets are classless.

What’s my take on all of this?  Well, I think it’s just the nature of the player in this era.  There’s no way half of the stuff players from all teams do, after accomplishing what they’re supposed to, would fly back in the 60’s, 70’s or even 80’s.  It’s partially to be blamed on the lack of policing that the players can do as if you throw near a batter, you run the risk of getting a warning and, in turn, hampering your ability to throw to the inner half, lest you be thrown out if one slips.  Plus, these guys get to wear nearly a suit of armor at the plate.  Look at what Barry Bonds used to wear — or Benny Agbayani…I remember he had the largest elbow pad I’ve ever seen.

I also think it’s very unfair to Reyes that he gets scrutiny for this sort of stuff.  Granted, he does the majority of hopping and jumping but that is his personality.  It’s also a part of what makes him so exciting to watch!  He’s a little ‘fidgety’ I guess. :)  But, if you’re going to target Reyes, you HAVE to also take into account some of the other celebrations.  How many times have I seen Wright come home on a big play and do that signature punching motion that reminds me of an umpire calling a runner out at home.  Maybe a little over the top.  If you want to look at someone who should be dusted, check out Tatis.  I mean, with his sideways bunny hop and standing on the plate while pointing up at the sky for, what seems like, a minute.  That should get him plunked — no doubt.

The thing is, it’s done all over.  From Jimmy Rollins with his pointing to the sky while standing on second after driving in the go ahead runs on Tuesday to Manny Ramirez pointing with both fingers out to center (or at Rivera) after hitting a bomb out of Fenway.  It’s the nature of the game today.

Oh, and maybe those Phillies players should worry about their own locker room and buy J. Roll a watch.  Maybe he can get to Shea on time and not be benched in a very important game.

Let’s Go Mets!

Great wins after a demoralizing loss send Mets to the top of the heap

2008 Season No Comments

Standings

After I cleaned up the blood that shot out of my eyes on Tuesday night, the Mets put together two nice wins.  John Maine wasn’t spectacular last night, but he was good enough.  Big Game Ollie was out in full force today.  He struck out 12 and, after an intentional walk to Burrell, almost got Howard for his 13th.  Unfortunately, Ollie had him 0-2 but hit him with a pitch — it would be his last batter.  Runs were scarce today.  Both pitchers were pitching well and it seemed as if the ump had a fairly wide strike zone.  It was a much better game, from a pitching stand point, than last night’s game where the Mets left about 1,000 men on base, not being able to land the knock out punch.

Well, the Mets should’ve swept the Phillies as they were better than them for 26 of the 27 innings played these last three days, but I guess you’ll have to take it.  While it was a brutal loss and I feel bad for Santana, it was a good example of what this team is made of.  They took a loss theat could’ve erased any good feeling you had over this past month and turned it on its ear.  So, instead of a first place team with a 3 game lead, they’re a first place team with a 1 game lead.  Either way, they’re in first, and that sounds good to me.

Bad news from yesterday is, Pedro’s father passed away.  Bad news from today is, Pagan is having season ending surgery to repair that shoulder he injured in the first month of the season.

Any thoughts on the past few days or the chances of our NY Mets?  I’d love to hear from you!

Phillies absolutely rob the pen for a win…

What the F?  All I have to say is, Santana needed to start the 9th.  Whether he wanted out or was pulled, he needed to start the inning.  With Billy being unavailable, he NEEDED to start the 9th.

I have nothing else to say.

10 in-a-row!

2008 Season No Comments

Wow — that was a good win.  They didn’t roll over and die, even after giving up the lead twice.

Santana wasn’t good, for sure, but the rest of the players picked each other up and got it done.  Ten in a row is nothing to take lightly.  It’s a nice winning streak but I need more.  Hopefully John Maine can get it done and the offense can give us #11.

Oh — I almost forgot!  Since the Phillies are idle tonight, I can say it…
WELCOME TO FIRST PLACE!

All Star Marathon is Finally Over and…

more of the same.  AL beats the NL.  Billy gives up a run, to tie the game, in the 8th — with 2 outs!  I bet Clint’s kicking himself for trying to get everyone in the game.

I stayed up for the whole thing and, after seeing the outcome, wished I had gone to bed.  It was a close play at the plate, but the runenr beat the tag.  D. Wright went 1-3 as the DH.  Billy, well, you know what he did…

The HR derby was great fun to watch.  That 2nd homer that Hamilton hit looked like it was out of the stadium.  I guess it wasn’t, but it sure looked like it just sailed into the night.  Man, he can really hit ‘em.  Three 500+ foot home runs.  Pretty amazing.

Santana versus the Reds, tomorrow night.  Let’s keep rolling and put those Phillies back on their heels!  See you tomorrow night!
